For this artwork I focused on the idea of pollutionin Beijing. The two geometric buildings are located in the city of Beijing.Originally the background for each photo was very polluted. However, with theuse of Photoshop, I edited the photos and created a different background byapplying a gradient. This resulted in avery fantasy like, bright blue background. This exaggerates the clear blue skydays we have in Beijing. Feridun Akgungor, a Turkish digital artist whocombines architectural imagery and soothing colours, originally inspired thispiece. Based on his works, I also wanted to achieve the idea of minimalism todisplay clear blue skies. In most countries this is very common but living herein Beijing a ‘blue sky day’ can be so much more surreal and noticeable.

Maggie Ayres was my initial inspiration to startthis piece as she explored mixed media with artworks mainly following the themeof “flowing” patterns. As I amcurrently situated in Beijing, we are all aware of how bad the AQI can get attimes; this was the second inspiration for this painting. I wanted toincorporate the idea of a pollution mask with the way Maggie Ayres expressesher artwork, using fabric and different forms of mixed media. In doing so, Ithought that a great idea would be to take an photograph of a person, surrounded by pollution, wearing the pollution mask. I primarily left the maskblank, whilst carefully building up layers of acrylic paint. The mask was thencreated in the style of Maggie Ayre’s work. I usedcotton, cloth, mod-rock and string for the texture before adding acrylic paintto express the idea of the “dirt”and all the filth in the air that the face mask catches. However, this isexaggerated to show people the intensity and seriousness of this problem. Iwanted my painting to be neat to the point where you can see every stroke, incontrast to the chaotic mess on the mask.”

Formy Project I focused on the theme of elements. I started my Project looking atbasic water movements and how water could be incorporated into differentobjects and elements and see how things react with other. After exploring ice andstill water it struck me to explore the patterns of water through splashes. Iwanted to see how flexible water was and how it reacts to differentenvironments. I planned various photo shoots where I tried to explore theelements of water in different formats including dropping ink within water andmilk. Also, living in China I wanted to incorporate the idea of pollution, theclean water represents the sky and purity of air, the ink is then dispersed around the vase and resembleshow the purity can be intoxicated by pollution and how it doesn’t just effect a single area but spreads until the vase wasfilled.
