If I were an educator, I wish…
By 傅予沁(上海闵行区诺德安达双语学校)

There are two special friends of mine. One of them is always hyperactive, greeting you warmly many times a day. He likes finding pleasure even in the smallest things, such as lining up instruments on seats, staring at masses on the street, or even doing a repetitive movement for one hour without a stop. But he is talented: he is adept at many kinds of instruments, trumpet, piano, cello and double bass. I had performed with him multiple times when we were in the same orchestra.

The other friend is very kind. He likes you to react with standup and sit-down while he says 1, 2 , 3. But he has the most impeccable memory. He can reel off every metro station in Shanghai, and whenever he asks for your birthday, he can quickly search his memory and tell you which celebrities were born on the same day as you.

Don’t they sound incredible? So far, you could probably guess which group I was talking about. In fact, these two friends are what people call autistic children.

Now, you may be less familiar with the term “autism”: it’s a complex brain disorder that affects social communication, learning and sometimes physical skills. They live and reign their own world, with their own rules and repetitive emotions.

Having known them for 6 years, I gradually understand this special group of people. What lifts my heart is that beyond the tantrums and the frustration and the never-ending hyperactivity, something is really unique on them: a pure and innocent nature, seeing the world without prejudice, and without evil.

One of them ever told me he was dejected as he couldn’t go to school after he finished the first year at primary school, because he was considered too special and retarded at that time to be accepted by any normal school.

If I were an educator, I wish I could establish a school specifically targeting towards those autistic children, a place neither for profits, nor for fame, but a platform solely serving them to explore their passionate interests and bring their potential talents into full play. Nowadays none of the schools are specially built for them, but the problem is, no matter how hard they try, they cannot follow the pace of ordinary schools. And in fact, just because their minds don’t fit into what the society deems as normal, they’re often bypassed, misunderstood, and even incessantly marginalized and exploited.

The school would offer a variety of curriculum for those children to choose from. Apart from fundamental education, where they can grasp the essential living skills as well as some specialized academic subjects, I wish that it could mostly put highlight on unearthing the special interests every one of them has, and actually cultivating these talents, whether it is art, music, cooking or other areas. It is to offer them a potential option of future occupations in the society, as well as the spiritual support for them to live a satisfactory life.

Simultaneously, if I were an educator, I wish I could stop people from thinking this group as those stereotypical freaks assumed widely by everyday man: they are not necessarily introverted — each one of them has their unique characteristics, different disposition and things they are proficient in. I were to organize activities, publish articles, and give lectures at schools, in offices and public areas. I wish to tell them that we, claiming ourselves to be normal, overlook the beauty that differences give us, and the fact that we are different doesn’t mean that one of us is wrong, it just means that there’s a different kind of privilege. As an educator, I would help you find your talent and let people know and appreciate your specials.

My wish is not a daydream, I would realize it one day.

If I were Yao Ming, I have three reforms for Chinese basketball
By 洪麦(上海浦东新区民办惠立学校)

My friend, do you know what is the favorite sport among teenagers in China? The answer is “basketball”. I entered the sports school in the fourth grade, and won many championships in shanghai. In a word, basketball is an important part of my life.

You know, China hosted the 2019 Men’s Basketball World Cup, the result of the competition was not good. Many people criticized Yao Ming. In China, no one doesn’t know Yao Ming. He is the greatest basketball player in the history of China, he’s a member of the NBA Hall of Fame, and now he is the chairman of CBA. As the chairman of CBA, how could Yao Ming lead China basketball to a higher level?
Today, I want to say: If I were Yao Ming, I have three reforms for Chinese basketball, that is “three combinations”:

Firstly, combination of sport with education. In fact, basketball is a sport that needs brains and wisdom very much, needs big picture view, team spirit, clear thought, and all these need culture and education background. So, to find out outstanding basketball players in campus, we need to get support from education system. More and more universities and schools should provide admissions for the group of students who have achieved high academic standard. In the future, more CBA players will come from CUBA, not only professional sports training teams.

Secondly, combination of sport with society. To develop a sport, it must have a broad social base, have a large number of fans of the sport. Basketball projects in China can also be operated easily, just one basket, one half court, one person can play basketball. So, we need to have a variety of games for the different ages. For example, Small basketball, campus basketball, community basketball, it is a highly competitive sport, a sport only in the game to continue to grow in level and ability. In addition, TV show is the main way to attract young people’s eyes especially girls who really like handsome players, like me.

Thirdly, combination of internal with external. Internally, players must be required to practice basic skills. Take me for example, two to three hours of training every day, nearly half of the time are practicing free throws, shooting and passing. I’ve also seen “Shanghai at 6 am “ because I often get up at 6 o’clock to practice shooting and shooting threes. The basketball association needs to publish relevant policy to restrict the athlete to practice the basic skills. For example, you can’t eat fried food and drink carbonated drinks. External, it is to strengthen exchanges with foreign countries, to send more promising children to train abroad. I went to the United States to attend summer school this summer. Three weeks of training with the school basketball team in boarding high school, I feel that I have made great progress in my technique and consciousness, so l feel like going abroad to study, to communicate, to go to the game, because it is very helpful to improve the skill and level of basketball players.

So, if I were the chairman of CBA, I hope to combine sport with education, with society, and internal training with external communication. Let basketball become the life style, belief and value of a generation of Chinese children. Finally, I want to say: Why do you play? Answer is, strong body, healthy mentality, team spirit, faith to never give up! This is why we play, we are more than just athletes.

If I were a theoretical physicist, like Hawking, I would…
By 颜正行(上海闵行区诺德安达双语学校)

Nowadays as technology develops at an undoubtedly fast rate, humanity raises its attention to machinery and robotics. There is a prominent prophecy made by Hawking, the famous theoretical physicist, claiming by time passes, human has to stop doing further researches on Al and Robotics. From my perspective, this thinking is false.

Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, this is Action from NACIS. Today, my topic is “if I were a theoretical physicist, like Hawking, I would promote the usage and people’s recognition of Al.”

After knowing my title, I know quite a few of the audience would be confusing, some of the people might not even have a concept of Al. Let me give a very brief definition, AI, it is the abbreviation of Artificial Intelligence, to be inclusive, scientists want them to behave similarly to a human, make up decisions as same as what a human does and even talk with a human tone. Lots of pupils voiced out thinking the invention or renovations on technology would enable robots to have self-awareness, those people have this weird idea that robots would attack us. Those people object mankind to do further developments in such technology. To reiterate, this idea is definitely invalid for the reason being they don’t have an overall recognition towards robotics.

I have joint my Robotics School Team, fighting in different kinds of competitions these years, what I have learned from those experiences is that only the codes control a robot, which means that if there’s no code commanding a robot to hit someone, they won’t. These robots, they are created by thousands of chips and wires, there is no brain inside them telling them what to do, what they only know is to follow whatever the code tells them to do.

Nevertheless, I will not say having different feelings would cause harm to us. Having different feelings, acting or behaving as humans do only means we gain great progress throughout our study of Al, then eventually, what we have created is something that even possibly takes over our chores, giving us more free time, even changing our lifestyles into the ones we always wanted, a technological world with different robots doing works for us.

Those people’s thinking sound absurd to myself, an Al or an Al robot will never have self-awareness, conversely, these machines always, always drive our life easier thus mankind should keep digging into robotics, machinery and technology as they are the future of us, the future of our next generations, maybe moreover, the future of all. With advanced robotic recognition, we can achieve more, learn more and invent more.
