羊驼抗体有助于对抗冠状病毒

Llama Antibodies Could Help in Fight Against Coronavirus

Llama antibodies can soon be playing a role in the global fight against COVID-19 if clinical trials live up to their early promise. The trials are being conducted by a Belgian biomedical start-up.
Researchers from the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology and Ghent University Center for Medical Biotechnology are saying that antibodies from a llama named Winter have blunted the coronavirus infections in lab testing. The technology wouldn´t be used to replace vaccines but rather to add to them, helping to protect people with weaker immune systems and those hospitalized by the virus.
Llamas have a particular kind of antibody called heavy chain antibody, and they´re much simpler than the ones that humans have. Due to this, scientists can easily take a little snippet of the protein and glue it to other proteins. Early studies showed effectiveness against several variants of the disease, including the highly infectious delta variant.

Astronomers find new class of planet that could host life

Astronomers might have been looking for alien life in all the wrong places, according to new research.
A team from the University of Cambridge in the UK has identified a new class of planet that is very different to Earth but could still support life.
These planets, known as hycean planets, are ocean-covered worlds that are up to 2.6 times larger than Earth and have hydrogen-rich* atmospheres* and temperatures up to almost 200C.
Scientists have mostly focused their search for alien life on planets of a similar size, temperature and atmosphere to Earth.
This has made sense because Earth is the only planet we know of that has life.
But now the University of Cambridge team believes there are more promising possibilities out there when it comes to finding life beyond our own solar system.
The researchers said hycean planets were more common and easier to observe than Earth-like planets, and this could lead to the discovery of microscopic* life within the next few years.
“Hycean planets open a whole new avenue in our search for life elsewhere,” said Dr Nikku Madhusudhan from Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy, who led the research.
Many of the main hycean planets identified by the researchers are bigger and hotter than Earth, but still have the characteristics* to host large oceans that could support microbial* life similar to that found in some of Earth’s most extreme aquatic environments.
The researchers have identified a “sizeable sample” of hycean planets for further investigation. These planets orbit small, dim stars called red dwarfs, between 35 and 150 light-years from Earth.
Signs of life on the planets could be picked up by a new generation of telescopes, such as NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, which is due to be launched into orbit later this year.
The research, reported in The Astrophysical Journal, found conditions on hycean planets meant it would be easier to detect “biosignatures”, which is a fancy term for signs of life.
“A biosignature detection would transform our understanding of life in the universe,” Dr Madhusudhan said.
“We need to be open about where we expect to find life and what form that life could take, as nature continues to surprise us in often unimaginable ways.”

Marvel’s 1st Asian Superhero Gets The Full Blockbuster Treatment In ‘Shang-Chi’

The best moments in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are the ones where you almost forget you’re watching a Marvel movie. Some of the hallmarks are still there: the deft comic banter, the high-flying action, the passing references to other characters and events in the Marvel universe. But the movie doesn’t get bogged down in series minutiae. Nearly 50 years after the character of Shang-Chi made his comic-book debut, during the ’70s martial-arts craze, he’s now the first Asian superhero to get the full Marvel movie treatment. When we first meet Shang-Chi, played by Simu Liu, he’s a young man living a pretty ordinary life in San Francisco.
But one day, he and his slackerish friend Katy — an amusing Awkwafina — are violently ambushed on a bus, and he fends off their attackers with a dazzling array of martial-arts moves. Turns out there’s a lot he hasn’t told Katy, like the fact that he’s a kung fu master who’s been hiding for years from his father, a very evil, very powerful centuries-old Chinese warlord named Wenwu，who’s played — in an inspired piece of casting — by the Hong Kong screen legend Tony Leung.
The director and co-writer, Destin Daniel Cretton, has done a fine job of absorbing any number of Asian action influences, from the slapstick fisticuffs of Jackie Chan to the balletic grace of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Speaking of Crouching Tiger: It’s delightful to see the great Michelle Yeoh turn up late in the show as a benevolent mentor to Shang-Chi. She prepares him for an epic showdown with his father, full of apocalyptic stakes, bloodless casualties and visual-effects overkill. But the finale also has a depth of feeling that sets it apart and leaves you wanting to linger in this particular world a while longer — before the next Marvel movie comes along.

Whale of a time spreads joy

It is a sight guaranteed to lift everyone’s spirits — the spectacular migration* of southern right whale calves and their “very protective” mothers.
People living on the eastern coast of Australia are used to seeing the annual migration of humpback whales, but these majestic* southern right whales have also been spotted over the past two months. Some have even cruised into beaches and inlets, to the delight of lucky locals.
While Australia’s southern right whale population is usually concentrated on the southern coastline of the Great Australian Bight, taking in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria, the beautiful creatures have ventured into NSW this winter.
Adult southern right whales can weigh as much as four city buses (80 tonnes) and reach 18m in length, or one and a half buses. Adult females are generally one to two metres longer than males.
There is a boat distance limit of 100m from adult whales and 300m from calves, while swimmers can get within 30m. Drones – popular for getting aerial photographs of the whales – must stay 100m away.
“We are sorry people are in lockdown and cannot see them,” Jackson said. “Normally it’s amazing, the amount of people who look out for the whales during their migration.”
Southern right whales are monitored* annually at Head of Bight and Fowlers Bay, SA, by research scientists attached to the Great Australian Bight Right Whale Study (GABRWS). The researchers have found that southern right whales travel across widely separated coastal areas of between 200 and 1500 km within a season. The longest journeys are taken by non-calving whales, but calving whales have also been recorded at locations up to 700 km apart within a single season.
While Australia’s southern right whale population is usually concentrated on the southern coastline of the Great Australian Bight, taking in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria, the beautiful creatures have ventured into NSW this winter.
Listed as endangered since 2000, southern right whales are distinguishable by their black colour. They are large, baleen whales that do not have a dorsal fin, unlike most of their balaenopterid* cousins and they have a thick layer of blubber covering their bodies.
Whales migrate annually for feeding and breeding purposes. The federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment said that the exact timing of the migration period varies from year to year “depending on water temperature, sea ice, predation risk, prey abundance and the location of their feeding ground.” The majority migrate from June to August before heading back towards the Southern Ocean and Antarctica from September to November.

Climate Change Is Threatening Komodo Dragons

Scaly and with forked tongues, Komodo dragons are the largest lizards to still walk the Earth.
But their days here may be numbered.
A new report from an international biodiversity conservation organization says the fearsome reptiles are edging closer to global extinction.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, an assessment of the health of tens of thousands of species across the globe, Komodo dragons have gone from “vulnerable” to “endangered.”
Why is the Komodo dragon — or Varanus komodoensis — so threatened? Climate change.
Rising global temperatures and higher sea levels, IUCN says, will reduce the Komodo dragon’s habitat by at least 30% over the next 45 years.
“The idea that these prehistoric animals have moved one step closer to extinction due in part to climate change is terrifying,” said Dr. Andrew Terry, conservation director of the Zoological Society of London.
Komodo dragons are native to Indonesia and only live in Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as the nearby island of Flores, according to IUCN.
“While the subpopulation in Komodo National Park is currently stable and well protected, Komodo dragons outside protected areas in Flores are also threatened by significant habitat loss due to ongoing human activities,” the report says.
Sharks and rays face major threats
The Red List update, released on Saturday and one day after the IUCN World Conservation Congress got underway in Marseille, bears other bad news.
Of the shark and ray species tracked by IUCN, some 37% are now threatened with extinction.
All of those threatened species are overfished, the group says, while some also face loss of habitat and are harmed by climate change.
It demonstrates the inability of governments to properly manage those populations in the world’s oceans, according to IUNC, but the report also includes a major success story of species management.
A revival of threatened tuna species offers hope
Of the seven most commercially fished tuna species, four of them — including albacore and bluefin tunas — showed signs of recovery in the latest assessment.
According to IUNC, the improvement among those species was the result of successful efforts to combat illegal fishing and enforce more sustainable fishing quotas.
“These Red List assessments are proof that sustainable fisheries approaches work, with enormous long-term benefits for livelihoods and biodiversity,” said Dr. Bruce Collette, chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Tuna and Billfish Specialist Group. “Tuna species migrate across thousands of kilometres, so coordinating their management globally is also key.”
Still, the group says many regional tuna populations remain significantly depleted due in part to overfishing.
