上海中学国际部校园媒体达人:他们用杂志和视频展现校园

观点的碰撞,想法的表达,探讨取代灌输,思想力不再局限于权威发声……校园媒体正成为年轻学子发声的重要平台。

本期特稿,我们走进上海中学国际部,看达人们怎样用杂志、视频这些或传统或创新的媒体形式表达他们的观察和思考。

上中国际校刊SHSID|Times主编

步入高中前,每个班级时不时发放的SHSID|Times就已经是我在中学时期经常和同学们传阅的读物。那充满创意且图文并茂的一页页纸,让我看到了我所向往的无限活力,也激发了我对高中生活的无限憧憬。正是因为这种崇拜的心态,促使我在十年级时递交了加入SHSID|Times的申请。

创办于2011年的SHSID|Times是上海中学国际部的官方校刊,同时也是学校主流的微信公众账号之一。作为老师、学生、校友了解校园新闻和讨论时事的平台,杂志涵盖了五个栏目:新闻、时尚生活、英文文学、汉语文学、科技与技术以及学生日志。52页的杂志和公众号频繁的推文都由76位来自编辑部、媒体部和视觉部的同学主导完成。

我清楚地记得成为主编后召开的第一次编辑会议,当时会场一片寂静,大家不知从何开始讨论。杂志过去的形象在我们的心中建立了一个框架,大大限制了我们的创意。在过去的七年中,杂志已经调整了选题方向、更新了设计,甚至还更换了纸张。那时我便发现,我们最大的挑战就是如何在传承杂志已有特质的同时,融入我们自己的创新想法。

我提出设立一个新的栏目—— Letters。

作为一个读者来信的栏目,Letters鼓励学生和老师发表他们对前一期杂志文章的看法,更鼓励大家撰写自己对校园时事的想法。SHSID|Times第一次和读者有了直接的互动与交流。如今翻开杂志的这一页,读者便会发现同学们对学生日志文章写作角度的不同看法、对学生会选举改革的想法、对作者的赞赏,等等。

随后,我们也对微信平台作了一系列调整,从文章和影片、摄影项目着手,扩大读者群。比如,花上几个周末的时间拍摄各国同学到上海各个餐厅品尝自己家乡佳肴的短片,就“食物在文化中的地位”这一话题采访同学们。我们还举办了一次“6字小故事”比赛,鼓励读者自己撰写小故事并投稿,被选中的故事会由摄影部门拍摄并在微信平台上发布。过去一年,多媒体不仅仅为SHSID|Times带来了更广阔的读者人群,也成为激发创意和不断挖掘杂志潜能的最佳推手。

过去的每一任主编都曾在SHSID|Times这本杂志上留下他们专属的印记,而正是这一点让我认识到为什么杂志至今仍是校园生活中不可缺少的一部分。这种不断创新的精神让SHSID|Times在不同读者眼中持续地发光发热,也让我自己在参与种种活动时注入了不一样的热情。

Before stepping into high school, SHSID/Times was already an occasional delight passed around the middle school division, carrying in its pages the glamorous lives I envisioned in high school. On each pigmented spread of students’ diverse original writing and designs, I saw an everlasting passion and creativity that I, too, hoped to pursue in my high school years. It is this admiration that led me to submit my own SHSID/Times application in my sophomore year.

Founded in 2011, SHSID/Times is the official bimonthly magazine of Shanghai High School International Division, as well as a digital WeChat subscription account where students, teachers, and alumni watch and read about the conversations buzzing on campus. Maintaining a broad yet student-centric focus, the magazine encompasses six sections: News, Lifestyle, Chinese Literature, English Literature, Science & Technology, and Student Journal. Both the 52-page publication and multimedia platform relies on the work of 76 students from the Editorial, Digital, and Visuals department.

I remember distinctly the creativity drain that frustrated the editors’ discussion at the first meeting I hosted after I was appointed Editor-in-Chief. We felt as if there was a frame that we were obligated to operate in, adhering to the rules and standards that previous generations had constructed. Over the past seven years, the magazine had reformed its editorial department, renewed its aesthetic, and even changed the type of paper. It was then when I realized that the problem of working with something that has been established for so long is the struggle between the past and the new, between the attempt to hold on to what is already there and personal innovation.

Amidst this sea of confusion and uncertainty, I knew that I would not be at peace if I had simply let my timidity consume me.

Hoping to experiment with an idea that I’ve had for a long time, I said to my team, “Let’s start a Letters Section.”

This step culminated in the first reader response section of the magazine, where the entire student body is allowed to voice their opinions on past articles and campus news. For the first time, there was a bridge of communication between the publication and its readers. Now, on the first spread of the magazine, readers will find student debates about the appropriate editorial angle for an article, calls for reforms in the student government election system, praises for a bold stance in an opinion piece on Chinese media, and many more reactions from our dear audience.

Later in the year, we also began expanding our digital platform to produce film series, photography projects, and more articles dedicated to an online audience. Stepping beyond our familiar leagues of the print issue, my team and I ventured on energy-packed weekend trips to niche restaurants in Shanghai to film international students discussing the roles of food in their cultures; photographers rushed around campus every lunch break for photographs for stories submitted by readers, and designers strived to create eye-catching yet professional WeChat design layouts.

Each past Editor-in-Chief has brought something new to the table, and when it came to me, I began to see that this is exactly what makes the publication still an integral part of student life today. It is this constant innovation that caters SHSID/Times to different audiences from one stage to the next. More than simply writing and designing, the publication taught me a spirit of creativity that I have learned to carry into my other endeavors – to inspire and be inspired.

顾名思义,上中国际部媒体团是制作全校范围内多媒体项目的主要组织,主要以活动视频的形式进行。媒体团有着悠久的历史, 十几任导演在十多年的时间里积累了学校活动报道的丰富经验。每当学生们经过教学楼大厅时,就会看到媒体团制作的各种校内活动视频,比如体育周、职业日、首届上海中学—上海中学国际部双语辩论锦标赛,等等。

虽然我曾在九、十年级时担任过新闻社主席,但以往的新闻工作经验远远没有达到这样的规模,只是在高中部段主任的指导下报道学校内的事件。十一年级时从班主任那儿听说了学校媒体团在招新,我就迫不及待地申请了导演的职位。我相信我能通过媒体团,用更有意义和更深入的方式为学校做出贡献。媒体团一直在改变,直到近几年才发展成为现在的样子。我也非常高兴能带领20名横跨高中所有年级的同学,组建新一代的媒体团队,并在这个充满活力的创新过程中发挥我自己的能力。

协调和安排学校活动定期报道的工作提升了我的能力,但迄今为止最为独特的一次经验则是“上海中学—上海中学国际部双语辩论赛”,它让我真正感受到了作为媒体团一员的重要性。

辩论赛期间,来自上海外语频道(International Channel Shanghai)的主持人爱新觉罗·贝和柏栩栩接受了我们的采访。当两位主持人被问及关于公众演讲与现代媒体的问题时,他们特别强调了新闻行业和演讲的重要性。与此同时,活动期间还有另外一位专业媒体人坐在我身旁,不知疲倦地在她的A5记事本上涂涂写写,进一步向我表明新闻报道不是一个抽象的概念。

有了这样的经验,我不禁想到,在参加媒体团时迈出的第一步或许真的可以促使我在未来选择从事新闻职业。

在不久前一年两次的学期新闻报道结束后,我作为媒体团导演的第一个学期也就落下了帷幕。然而,在规模和实际内容方面,媒体团在上中国际部仍有很大的发展空间,新的篇章也才刚刚开始。虽然媒体团肯定会继续拍摄校园活动视频,但我们对于探索运用其他媒体形式也抱有极大的兴趣,而不仅仅局限于采访和新闻报道。

上中国际部的媒体团会继续持续不同的变化和创新,因为对于每一任导演来说,都需要维护旧的传统,并开辟新的轨迹。

The SHSID Media Group, as the name implies, is the main entity to produce school-wide multimedia projects, mainly in the form of event videos. The organization has led a long history here at Shanghai High School International Division, with over a decade of experience led by generations of Directors in reporting school events. Every time a student walks by the front entrance of an academic building, he/she is sure to detect various videos that Media Group has produced on in-school activities, from Sports Week and Career Day to the first SHS-SHSID Bilingual Debate Tournament.

While I have had previous experience in journalism through taking over as President of the News Club in my freshman and sophomore year, my past endeavors have not reached such a scale as to report on school-wide events directly under the jurisdiction of the director of senior high school. Having heard of Media Group from the school administration in my junior year, I was eager to apply for the Director position, believing that I can contribute to my school community in a more meaningful and in-depth manner. It wasn’t until recent years was Media Group developed into the organization that it is now, and each year Media Group was shaped into something different than before. Therefore, it has been my honor to lead 20 students, across all four high-school grades, in a new generation of the Media Group team, taking up my own role in this dynamic process.

Even though I consider coordinating and scheduling regular reporting on school-hosted activities to be exceedingly meaningful in shaping my current abilities, one distinctive experience, or rather encounter, has shaped my role in Media Group thus far – the SHS-SHSID Bilingual Debate Tournament.

It may seem out of place, considering this event was a competition intended for students of SHS and SHSID, but what was especially inspiring during this experience was our interview with two professional TV hosts – Aixinjueluo Bei and Bai Xuxu – from the International Channel Shanghai (ICS). As they spoke in response to questions regarding public speaking in the student population and televised media, the two hosts especially highlighted the pursuit of practicing journalism from a young age. It did not hurt that a report from another local news sources sat next to me during the event, scribbling tirelessly on her A5 notepad, further demonstrating that journalism and news reporting were not abstract and unobtainable.

With this experience in mind, I can envision how taking the first step by participating in Media Group can translate into future possibilities in professional journalism and so much more.

Wrapping up with the biannual semester news report not long ago, my first semester as the Director of Media Group has just concluded. Nonetheless, there is so much room for Media Group to grow and thrive as a school-wide organization, both in terms of size and substantive content. While Media Group would certainly continue event videos that have become one of its founding trademarks, the team is excited to explore possible leeway in other forms of media, going beyond just interviews and news reports.

Through the constantly dynamic change and innovation that has been seen so far and will continue to be seen in Media Group, one principle of directing the Media Group holds constant for each generation of Directors: to uphold old traditions and blaze new trails.
